In recent years, with the aim of producing high-quality salt to supply the domestic market, salt makers in Hon Khoi have produced two new types of salt: tarpaulin salt and Japanese refined salt. Tarpaulin salt is made from large salt fields, about 1 hectare in area, then covered with tarpaulin and left for about five months to be harvested. Each tarpaulin salt field is estimated to yield about 500 tons of salt per year.

As for Japanese refined salt, the production process is more elaborate. The salt fields must be paved with bricks, filled with seawater and left to dry in the sun for seven to eight days before harvesting. The next step is to grind it finely, then continue to dry it in the sun.

Every year, Hon Khoi supplies the domestic market with about 30,000 tons of various types of salt. Coming to Hon Khoi during the salt-making season, we can easily see “mountains” of pure white salt collected from the salt fields waiting to be sold./.
